Dr. Richard Hills joined the Joint ALMA Observatory in November 2007. He had previously been Professor of Radio Astronomy at the University of Cambridge in England. He had however been involved with ALMA for many years before that through serving on various advisory committees and reviews and in particular he did a lot of work on the development of the water vapour radiometers which will be used on ALMA for correcting atmospheric fluctuations. He previously worked on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope, which is in Hawaii, being involved with the development of the telescope and its instrumentation and also in using it for a range of millimeter wave astronomy projects. In ALMA, he is leading the scientific activities during the construction phase of the project, in particular the Commissioning and Science Verification, ensuring that ALMA reaches its full potential. |
