Joined ALMA in mid 2006 as the Quality Manager. Currently stationed in Charlottesville, VA, but travels frequently to Europe, Japan and Chile to participate in the many ALMA reviews and acceptance events. Prior to ALMA, Mike worked in the manufacturing industry for a military contracting company. Interesting projects included weather radar for fighter jets, optical and RF systems for submarine periscopes and control and navigation software for battleships. Various roles included Quality Manager, Software Engineer and Systems Engineer. This environment offered experience with mature quality systems like ISO and CMMi, that have little value in a short lived, academic project like ALMA. A most enlightening observation is that the quality within the ALMA project is driven not by profit or the harsh enforcement of industry standards, but by the teamwork and common desire of all participants to make a lasting contribution to astronomy.
