The results of the 2011 ALMA-Conicyt Fund competition for the development of Chilean astronomy have been released. The Joint Allocation Committee for the funds analyzed 20 projects that were submitted for consideration and recommended for awards. The competition results are available here.

This program is part of the Scientific Collaboration Agreement for Development of Astronomical Research, which was signed on October 28, 2003 and its subsequent modifications. The signatories are Chile's National Commission for Scientific and Technological Research (Comisión Nacional de Investigación Científica y Tecnológica, or CONICYT), the European Southern Observatory (ESO), Associated Universities Inc. (AUI), and the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ). These entities are in charge of construction and operation of the Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array (ALMA). The agreement establishes the creation of a fund for development of Chilean astronomy -- the ALMA-CONICYT Fund -- which is administered by CONICYT along with the Joint Committee which has equal numbers of Chilean members and members representing ALMA.

The objective of the competition is to support the development of astronomy in Chile and prepare it to take advantage of the ALMA radio telescope through financing for research, outreach and human resources projects in the areas of astronomy and related sciences.
