17 November, 2015 / Read time: 2 minutes

40 speakers and 200 participants are already registered for the third version of the acclaimed Astro-engineering Workshop in Chile, to be held from November 24 to 26, 2015. The Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) and the European Southern Observatory (ESO) invite all interested parties to participate in this new event.

Due to the presence of different astronomical observatories in Chile, the focus of the III Astro-engineering Workshop in Chile will be on exploring the challenges and opportunities between different actors and establishing future collaborations between participants.

The event will include the participation of relevant speakers on the development of astronomic instrumentation and computing in Chile, and will also include representatives from different observatories in Chile and around the world. Specifically, these include ALMA Director, Pierre Cox; Program Director for the future E-ELT observatory, Roberto Tamai, and the Director of Energy, Science, Technology and Innovation of the Chilean Department of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Gabriel Rodríguez.

“The ALMA Observatory is committed to strengthening the development of both support infrastructure and competencies in these disciplines, which offer a potential for technological transfer and constitute an undeniable source of inspiration for future technological business in Chile,” indicates Jorge Ibsen, Head of the ALMA Computing Department and one of the main driving forces behind this event.

This third version of the workshop will also include a reflection on opportunities arising from astronomy in areas as diverse as biotechnology, tourism and business. To emphasize this point, the Chilean Minister of Economy, Luis Felipe Céspedes, will be present to open the third version of the workshop, where he will share his vision from the public sector.

This event is organized by ALMA and ESO, with the collaboration of AURA, the Departments of Foreign Affairs and Economy of Chile, SOFOFA Innova and the Advanced Center of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (AC3E) of Universidad Federico Santa María. It is also sponsored by CONICYT, Fundación Copec-UC, INRIA, Silica and Microsoft.
