Chile's Housing and Urbanism Minister, Rodrigo Pérez, visited ALMA along with the Undersecretary of Economy, Tomás Flores, the Undersecretary of Tourism, Jacqueline Plass, and the Undersecretary of Regional Development, Miguel Flores.

The government officials were impressed by the cutting-edge technology at the astronomical observatory and by the progress in project construction, expressing their pride at having such a facility built in Chile.

The minister, undersecretaries and the advisors who accompanied them observed the 37 ALMA antennas that have already been installed on the Chajnantor plain at an altitude of 5,000 meters. When construction of the radio telescope is complete at the end of next year, ALMA will have 66 antennas that will operate in unison to investigate the "cold universe."
