12 June, 2013 / Read time: 2 minutes

ALMA received a prestigious award from the Technological Development Corporation (CDT) of the Chilean Chamber of Construction (Cámara Chilena de la Construcción). This award is given each year to a company or organization that has made a significant contribution in areas such as productivity, innovation, sustainability, and technology transfer and dissemination. The award highlights the commitment to, and interest in, development of the construction industry.

This year, the ALMA observatory is the recipient of the CDT award for Technological Milestone for being the most powerful millimeter and submillimeter wavelength telescope in the world and for its use of cutting-edge technology in both construction and operations. The award also recognizes ALMA's ongoing effort to protect the flora and fauna of the area where the observatory is located, close to San Pedro de Atacama in northern Chile. This has contributed to safeguarding the natural reserves located near the project site.
