Another milestone in the history of ALMA is the arrival of the Antennas to Chilean ports. The North American and Japanese antennas arrived at the port of Antofagasta, and the European antennas arrived at the Port of Mejillones.
After unloading and placing each antenna on a low bed truck, these were transported across 311 km by land to San Pedro de Atacama, a trip which lasted three days due to the weight and size of the antennas. This entire trip is overseen by Carabineros de Chile (Chilean police). In this photo: transportation of an antenna across the Atacama Desert.
