ALMA is situated more than 5000 meters above sea level in the Chilean desert, on the Chajnantor plateau. Here, the dry air and thin atmosphere allow a spectacular view into the Universe and make it the perfect place for such a sensitive telescope. © B. Tafreshi (ESO)
ALMA is a nonprofit organization that uses a renewable resource (space observation is an endless resource) in the altruistic pursuit of knowledge under the motto: “In search of our cosmic origins.”
The construction and operation of ALMA is one more on the list of international observatories installed in Chile, which attests to a country that attracts foreign investment, uses cutting-edge technology, and has highly qualified personnel.
The strategic importance given by the State of Chile to international observatories as unique schools of engineering and science has resulted in different means to transfer advanced technologies and knowledge.
