ALMA celebrations for the 1st anniversary of the black hole image by the EHT

9 April, 2020 / Read time: 2 minutes

On April 10, 2019, the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT), a planet-scale array of eight ground-based radio telescopes forged through international collaboration, released the first direct visual evidence of a supermassive black hole and its shadow. ALMA was one of eight telescopes contributing to this incredible result and had a crucial role in achieving such an angular resolution (20 micro-arcseconds).

To celebrate the first anniversary of this worldwide milestone, ALMA is organizing a variety of activities. All of them virtual due to the coronavirus pandemic: we released a Coronavirus-Black-Hole meme in ALMA's social networks, together with a Black Hole filter for Instagram, and a celebrating chapter of the animated series #WAWUA about EHT breakthrough image.

Today, the invitation is to follow ALMA's social networks to check the first release of # AskALMA's series, explaining black holes.

Last but not least. Exactly a year after the world discovered the first image of a black hole, the ALMA-VLBI team will have a celebration webinar. The public will be able to interact with the same scientists that participated in the project and observations that made last year's top scientific discovery. The event will be viewable through Zoom and Youtube Live this Friday, April 10th at 18:00 UT time in English and 21:00 UT in Spanish.

These talks are part of the #LetsTalkALMA campaign: virtual spaces for discussions on science, astronomy, and other STEAM topics through streamings, webinars, social networks, and internet platforms. Four talks streamed last week, and the next one airs today:

  • Thursday, April 9, 2020 · 16:00 (UT) · Suzanna Randall (astronomer and astronaut trainee) · Zoom Webinar · FB Live (in English) · Astronaut training program + Girls and Young Women interest in Science & Technology.

Don't miss these activities! Future updates will be posted here:
