Fiber Optic Interruption Affects Communications at ALMA Observatory

25 March, 2015 / Read time: 1 minute

Update (03-25-2015 6:30 pm):
Please note that communications with the ALMA observatory have been reestablished. However, if the current weather conditions do not improve, new interruptions could take place.

The Chilean Government announced this morning that fiber optic communications have been cut off as a result of heavy rains in the northern part of the country, affecting connectivity from Copiapó to Arica. Personnel on shift at the observatory have reported no other problems and are functioning with limited connectivity via satellite phone.

Although the authorities are working to find a solution, thus far there is no estimated time of repair due to poor weather conditions in the area.
