“ALMA, exploring our cosmic origins” is the title of the exhibition that is being displayed in Espacio Fundación Telefónica (Av. Providencia 127, Providencia, Santiago, Chile).

Through a set of impressive photographs and videos, it explains the innermost workings of the most powerful earth observatory in the history of humankind, it clarifies the reason why it is installed at 5,000 meters above sea level in the middle of the Atacama desert, what it looks for and what it has discovered so far about our cosmic origins.

From October 7, 2015 to January 31, 2016
Providencia 127, Santiago, Chile.
Monday-Friday from 10 to 20 hrs. Weekends from 11 to 20 hrs.
Free of charge.

List of Activities

Robotics Workshops for Schools

As part of the exhibit on "ALMA, exploring our cosmic origins," 1st to 12th grade classes can experience the interaction with concrete scientific and technological knowledge.

The educational experience will focus on the history of ALMA, its origins, countries involved, why it was located in Atacama, what it hopes to find among other relevant content, what makes ALMA "the most powerful earth observatory in the history of humankind," and will give students the concrete experience of putting the knowledge acquired into practice by building a simple technological prototype.

Professors interested in bringing their classes can select from among the following four activities depending on the grade level: “Antennas with solar panels”, “Robotic arm with telescope”, “Time and distance between planets”, “Construction of an optic telescope”.

From October 7, 2015 to January 3, 2016, Monday to Friday from 9:30 am to 1:00 pm and from 2:00 pm to 5:30 pm.
Providencia 127, Santiago, Chile.
Free of charge -Sign up required- Limited space.

Round Table - “Music and Astronoy: A Universe of Sounds”

How many songs has been wrote inspired in the Universe? The ALMA Director, Pierre Cox, who has always been surrounded by music, will moderate this discussion group and will exchange impressions with chilean musicians.

One of the participants will be the chilean TV host, journalist and musician Sergio Lagos, who has just launched his new record entitled “Cosmos”, which we heard in the inauguration of this ALMA's exhibition.

Besides, the organizer of the "Festival Sonar + D", Paloma Chicharro and the ALMA astronomer Antonio Hales, will introduce the collaborative work oriented to generate sounds captured by the observatory that will be used as primary matter for other musicians to make their compositions.

THIS ACTIVITY IS POSTPONED due to force majeure. The new date will be announced in this website.
Providencia 127, Santiago, Chile.
Free of charge

Conference “The ALMA radio telescope and its contribution to global astronomy”

José Gallardo, astronomer for the ALMA radio telescope, will explain how it works and the discoveries made by this revolutionary instrument, the best astronomical project in existence to date.

Thursday, October 8, 2015 at 7:00 pm.
Providencia 127, Santiago, Chile.
Free of charge.

Round table: Is there a connection between art and astronomy?

A swing in La SIlla Observatory, a giant ball rolls between the ALMA antennas...3 artists exhibit their art and visions on the potential for creative connection between art and astronomy.

Guest speakers: Dagmara Wyskiel, Enrique Rivera and María Ignacia Edwards.

Thursday, October 15, 2015 at 7:00 pm.

School Talks: Liza Videla

ALMA astronomers, Liza Videla and Sergio Martin, will explain to students why such a far-away and inhospitable place was chosen to house the most modern radio telescope in the world and why this new instrument is so important to global astronomy.

Due to its unprecedented sensitivity and precision, ALMA is becoming a key tool for studying the first stars and galaxies that have arisen from the cosmic "dark ages" billions of years ago. It also gives scientists a detailed look at the complex chemistry of the giant gas and dust clouds, true maternities of stars and planetary systems.

To sign up your elementary or high school class for this talk, write to [email protected] or call +56 2 26 91 44 32.

Monday, October 19, 2015, from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm.
Espacio Fundación Telefónica, Providencia 127, Santiago, Chile.
Free of charge -Sign up required.

Round table on astronomical heritage: How can we get the most out of the Chilean skies?

The CEO of Fundación Imagen de Chile, Myriam Gómez, the director of the Astrotourism Chile project, Pablo Álvarez, and the science writer responsible for Astroblog, Ricardo García, will present on the potentials of Chile as a global astronomical destination.

Tuesday, October 20, 2015 at 7:00 pm.
Providencia 127, Santiago, Chile.

Ensemble Bartok Concert

Classical music will accompany the “Midnight Museum” activities at the ALMA exhibit in Espacio Fundación Telefónica.

The Ensemble Bartok Chile, directed by Valene Georges, will perform its program, “Chile, Window to the Universe”, including the piece, “Chajnantor”, by Chilean composer and National Music Prize Winner, Miguel Letelier. The piece is inspired by the special location and purpose of Chajnantor, where the ALMA observatory is located.

Friday, October 23, 2015 at 9:30 pm.
Providencia 127, Santiago, Chile.
Free of charge.

Radioastronomy workshop for teachers

“What is essential is invisible to the eye,” declared Antoine de Saint-Exupery's “The Little Prince”. Likewise, the cold Universe is invisible to traditional (optical) telescopes, preventing them from revealing the secret of how stars and planets are formed, how galaxies come together, and how complex molecules create the basis of life. This is the new astronomical frontier of knowledge that ALMA is starting to explore, hand in hand with radioastronomy.

Workshop participants will receive the ALMA Radioastronomy Manual.

Open enrollment for elementary and high school professors.

To sign up, write to [email protected] or call +562 2691 4432.

Tuesday, October 27, 2015, from 3:00 pm to 6:30 pm.
Room A - Espacio Fundación Telefónica, Providencia 127, Santiago, Chile.
Free of charge -Sign up required- Limited space.
